Vairocana – The Embodiment of Dharmakaya
Vairocana Buddha is a central, cosmic figure in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. He embodies the Dharmakaya—the ultimate truth or reality beyond form—and is regarded as the primordial Buddha from whom all enlightened qualities arise. Often called the “Great Sun Buddha,” Vairocana symbolizes the illumination that dispels ignorance and reveals inherent wisdom.

Vairocana represents universal, unchanging truth that transcends duality. In Esoteric traditions such as Shingon Buddhism and Tibetan Vajrayana, he is understood as the source from which all Buddhas and bodhisattvas emanate. Among the Five Dhyani Buddhas, he occupies the central position, transforming ignorance into the wisdom of the Dharmadhatu.

He is typically depicted in white, symbolizing the unity of all colors and wisdoms. His most common gesture is the Dharmachakra mudra (Wheel-Turning Gesture), representing the teaching of universal truth.

In Japan, Vairocana is known as Dainichi Nyorai (“Great Sun Tathagata”), reflecting his radiating, all-encompassing light of wisdom.

Mandalas & Practice
Vairocana is almost always the central figure in major esoteric mandalas, including the Womb Realm (Garbhadhatu) and Diamond Realm (Vajradhatu) mandalas. In practice, visualization of Vairocana cultivates insight into the non-dual nature of reality and purifies ignorance.
He is especially fundamental to the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra) tradition, where he represents the vast, interpenetrating cosmos—an infinite web in which all phenomena reflect and contain one another.
