Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava)
Guru Rinpoche, meaning “Precious Guru,” is the great tantric master who firmly established Vajrayana Buddhism across the Himalayas in the 8th century. Revered as the “Second Buddha,” he is the spiritual founder of the Nyingma tradition—the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism.
✨ Key Aspects of His Legacy
• Miraculous Birth
According to tradition, he manifested as an eight-year-old child seated upon a lotus in Lake Dhanakosha in Oddiyana (present-day Swat Valley).
• Establishing Buddhism in Tibet
Invited by King Trisong Detsen, Guru Rinpoche subdued obstructing forces and enabled the construction of Samye Monastery—the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet.
• Terma (Hidden Treasures)
To protect the Dharma for future generations, he concealed sacred teachings and ritual objects to be revealed later by destined tertöns (treasure revealers).
• Sacred Sites Blessed
Through meditation and realization, he sanctified many holy places, including the Asura Cave in Pharping, Nepal, and Paro Taktsang in Bhutan.
• Eight Manifestations
Guru Rinpoche appeared in eight forms—peaceful, semi-wrathful, and wrathful—to guide beings according to their needs, from Shakya Senge to Dorje Drolo.⸻
