Dvibhuja Mahakala (Two-Armed Mahakala)

The Two-Armed Mahakala (Skt: Dvibhuja Mahākāla) is one of the most important wrathful Dharma protectors in Tibetan Buddhism. Fierce in appearance yet compassionate in essence, he safeguards the teachings and removes obstacles on the path to enlightenment.

Principal Form: Bernagchen (The Black-Cloaked One)

Bernagchen is the principal protector of the Karma Kagyu lineage and the personal guardian of the Karmapas.
    •    Lineage Origin: Though arising from the Nyingma terma (revealed treasure) tradition, he was later adopted by Karma Pakshi, the Second Karmapa, as the central protector of the Karma Kagyu school.
    •    Role: Chief guardian of the Karma Kagyu lineage.

Iconography
    •    Appearance: A stout, blue-black figure with one face and three blazing red eyes, standing amid flames of pristine awareness.
    •    Right Hand: Holds a curved knife (kartika/drigug), cutting ego, attachment, and ignorance.
    •    Left Hand: Holds a skull cup (kapala) filled with blood, symbolizing the transformation of negative emotions into wisdom.
    •    Attire: Wears a great flowing black cloak over a tiger-skin loincloth — hence the name Bernagchen (“Black Cloak”).

Other Notable Two-Armed Forms

* Panjaranatha (Lord of the Pavilion)
Primary protector of the Sakya tradition, often depicted holding a wooden gong (gandhi) across his arms.

* Newari Mahakala
In Newar Buddhism of Nepal—especially within Kathmandu Valley monasteries—two-armed Mahakala statues are commonly placed at entrances (often opposite Ganesha) to remove obstacles and protect sacred space.

Symbolism
    •    Two Arms: Represent the inseparable union of method (compassion) and wisdom.
    •    Crown of Five Skulls: Transformation of the five poisons—anger, desire, ignorance, jealousy, and pride—into the five Buddha-wisdoms.
    •    Standing on Corpses: Complete subjugation and uprooting of ego and destructive tendencies, ensuring they cannot re-arise.
